August 1, 2025
Welcome back to school, everyone!! Only a few more weeks before school starts. I hope you all have been enjoying this well-deserved time off, and are almost ready to come back to school! School resumes Wednesday, August 20th at 8:00am!
In the coming days and weeks, you will get more information from the school, but I thought I would start by giving you some updates, and reminding you of a few things.
We are celebrating our 95th anniversary this year, and are so excited!! We have a few fun events planned and look forward to sharing the time with you.
We will have a new theme for this school year. Our theme this year is “Riding the wave of learning-together”. This theme reminds us that learning is an adventure, and every day brings a new wave to ride. Just like surfers who need balance, teamwork, and courage, our students will learn, grow, and take on new challenges with the support of their teachers, classmates, and families.
At Glenoaks, we believe that when our students, staff, and families work together, we create the momentum to reach new heights. We’ll celebrate every success—big and small—as we ride this wave of learning side by side.
Our academic focus continues to be Reading Comprehension. It is our district and school goal that every student is a reading by grade 3, and is math proficient by grade 6. We ask for your support at home in making this an attainable goal! The initial CAASPP scores are reporting growth for our school, and we can’t wait to share the official data with you soon!
Staffing: Within our community, we have a few updates. Mrs. Soghomonian has accepted a promotion as a Teacher Specialist for Cerritos Elementary. Though this news is difficult for a lot of us, we are so proud of Mrs. Soghomonian and wish her the best. Additionally, Ms. Jenny will now be the TK CDCC teacher in our new TK classroom. Lastly, Ms. Cheryl, our Occupational Therapist, has also embarked on a new opportunity.
We have the pleasure of welcoming a few new teachers to Glenoaks from within GUSD. Welcome:
- Ms. Melissa Cerrato – 1st Grade
- Ms. Michelle Yi– 1st Grade
For our existing families, you will see that there will be changes at our school with teacher placements. We will share all that in the coming weeks.
Bell Schedule: Our Bell Schedule has changed by a few minutes this year. It is attached to this message. .
Banking Day - Wednesday Afternoon Early Dismissal
Every Wednesday, including the first day of school, is Banking Day. That is a day where an hour is designated for the staff to regularly meet, collaborate, and monitor the progress of our students. At Glenoaks, banking days happen on Wednesdays after school. This means school will start each day at the same time, but everyone will be dismissed earlier. Please see the attachment in this email.
Drop-off and Pick-up Details
We are going to continue using the front of the school for drop-off and pick-up. The back drop-off will be for staff and special education transportation only. If your schedule allows, I highly recommend parking close to the school and walking for drop-off and pick-up. It's a great time to connect with other families! I have attached a map with a suggested route for the drive thru lane. For our new families, please take the time to familiarize yourself with the drive to help with the morning rush
Upcoming events:
- TK/K/New Family Orientation
On Thursday, August 14, at 11am and 3pm, we will be hosting a new family orientation for all our incoming families. Please join us at one of the designated times to learn about our school and get to see our campus before the first day of school. This is a great opportunity to bring your child along, so that they see their school. Unfortunately, we will not visit any classrooms.
- Teacher Reveal Afternoon
Please join our parent organizations on August 19th at 5:00pm, as we welcome you to a new school year. This is a community building event, where families gather on the front lawn, check which class they are in, and get to know each other. Teachers and staff DO NOT attend. If you are unable to attend, don’t worry. The same information will be available on Parent Portal at the exact same time. This year, we will have a Dippin Dots cart for our families to enjoy, and help support out PTA!
- Back to School Night
Thursday, August 28th
6:00 for 4th - 6th grades adult-only
6:45 for TK - 3rd grades
Back to School Night is an adult only evening, when you will get to join teachers in their classroom to hear about expectations for the year.
- Minimum Day
Friday, August 29th - This will be an early day dismissal. Please see the attached document for minimum day times.
Parent Organizations at Glenoaks:
Our parent organizations at Glenoaks are the pillars of our school. Without our PTA and GESF (Foundation) we would not have many of the events, experiences and upgrades we do. That’s why I empower any of you that can, to join and volunteer. The PTA has a few positions available for event specific opportunities. Please reach out to them if you are interested.
