On November 8, 2022, California voters approved Proposition 28: The Arts and Music in Schools (AMS) Funding Guarantee and Accountability Act. The measure required the state to establish a new, ongoing program supporting arts instruction in schools beginning in 2023–24.
MUSICAL THEATER PROGRAM
The Glenoaks after school musical theater program offers students the opportunity to expand their learning in musical and theatrical arts through the collaborative production of a yearly musical theater performance. It is comprised of 3 main courses of study— Musical Theater Performance, Makeup Design, and Stage Arts— through which students can discover the magic of theater and performance art while developing invaluable life skills.
MUSICAL THEATER PERFORMANCE
Open to 4th-6th grade students, joining the yearly Glenoaks musical theater performance cast gives students an opportunity to develop their public speaking skills, facilitate their movement and dance learning, and collaborate with a broad team of students in the creation of a musical theater piece. Their passion and commitment is shared through school-wide and community performances which highlight the vitality of the arts in our community.
DANCE/THEATER
Theatre is an integral part of all of our every day interactions, whether or not we are aware of it. The new theatre program is designed to develop and enhance elementary children’s social, emotional and performance skills, while giving them a safe space to experiment with theatre, dance and movement in a social atmosphere. Theatre has been proven to increase self-awareness, harness confidence, and help children learn how to clearly express themselves in many different ways. Through dance, emotional recall, improvisation, movement, voice and articulation, writing and more, the program wants to meet your child where they are and let them explore all that theatre arts has to offer:
VISUAL ART
The Visual Arts trimester includes 12 weeks of multi-media art explorations with an emphasis on ceramics, but also includes explorations in 2D mediums. Through close collaboration by grade level, projects are selected that deepen classroom learning while enabling exploration and extension of understanding in creative ways. Students are also exposed to the Elements of Art and Principles of Design, engage in problem solving, and learn to assess their own work for unity. By the end of the trimester, students will have completed 3-4 multistep projects.
MAKEUP DESIGN
Open to 4th-6th grade students, members of the Makeup Design team learn to conduct research to aid in the design and eventual execution of makeup looks for Glenoaks theatrical productions. As a team, students not only learn to collaborate throughout the artistic process in the creation of a unified vision for the production, but learn how to effectively use a variety of makeups and materials to actually realize their visions onstage.
STAGE ARTS
Open to 6th grade students, the Stage Arts program introduces career technical education in the craft of production and design. In collaboration with Wilson Middle School’s Stage Arts class, 6th grade students learn the ins and outs of lighting, sound, and projection design, technology, and operation, costuming, and stage management. Students learn through hands-on experience how to design and run a show from top to bottom, and actively do so during both Wilson MS and Glenoaks ES theatrical productions.
